Each jar comes with a brand new metal canning lid that has been modified with your choice of a larger “heavy” duty or smaller “hobbyists” injection port and a fresh air exchange (FAE) hole that is covered with a .25 micron laboratory grade filter.

Although the lid filter can handle being steam pressure sterilized multiple times (assuming prior care is taken when handling the lid pre and post use) each lid will come with an additional back up filter to increase the longevity of its use.

To give our cultures the absolute highest levels of effectiveness and love all of our blocks are supplemented with organic gypsum, organic coffee, and are hydrated water(h2o) from a 5-stage reverse osmosis system. This helps ensure as close to a monitorable and more importantly measurable nutrient profile available to your mushrooms.

Why should you care about what's being added? 

Unlike plants, mushrooms are heterotrophic organisms. This means that mushrooms require external nutrients to grow. "We are what we eat eats."

So what gives with the addition of Gypsum and WHAT is it?

First, the technical stuff. Gypsum is the dihydrated form of calcium sulfate (CaSO4 2H2O). What does that mean to us? Contrary to popular belief, Gypsum does NOT affect pH. What it DOES do with respect to pH is act more so as a pH buffer. A pH buffer is something that is able to keep pH at a nearly constant value.

How Gypsum is useful to us nutritionally in a grow is that it provides an a source of calcium and sulfur, both which mushrooms need for healthy growth. Calcium (C) should be noted as one of the 2 main macronutrients required by fungi to develop proper structural requirements, the other being Nitrogen (N) is the other and is responsible for the energy. Organic coffee is used here as our source of Nitrogen.

Gypsum is usually added to grain spawn (rye, oats, wild bird seed, millet, corn, ect.) to keep the grains from sticking together, and to provide the grower another chance to provide the mycelium with those additional nutrients.

Phosphorus (P),  Potassium (K) and Magnesium (Mg) are also considered macronutrients for mushrooms. Other notable trace elements are Iron (Fe), Selenium (Se), Zinc (Zn), Magnesium (Mn), Copper (Cu) and Molybdenum (Mo) appear to be needed for diverse functions.

Since there are multiple ways to sterilize materials anything Biobasement has marked as "sterilized" means that the product has been subject to a constant temperature of 250° F (121°C) for a minimum of 120 minutes. This sterilization temperature is often displayed as 15psi with regards to steam sterilization done under pressure (psi means pounds per square inch) using a pressure cooker.
